Ever in My Life
by Bob Lucas
I see a world waiting for a chance to be free
I see children laughing and leaving them be
A place in the sunshine where truth can abide
A safe destination from the rolling tide
Where fearing your neighbor doesn’t work anymore
It was never in my life, was it ever in yours
I see conversation as a means to an end
Disagreement a small part of being a friend
I see everyone knowing they can’t always be right
And words of bright passion are no reason to fight
The children are watching we’d be to fools ignore
Ever in my life, ever in yours
I watch and I wonder I listen and learn
The longing for freedom continues to burn
Still I’m not understanding how peace can be won
What’s the point of a handshake at the point of a gun
The children are playing they’re playing at war
Ever in my life, ever in yours
As long as the grass grows and there’s sun in the sky
The time to enjoy it and to wonder why
My reason for living I feel in my heart
If I can plant just one notion to just make a start
This world is a garden a bountiful store
Ever in my life, ever in yours
